What are “where's my order?” calls costing your office?

Every delivery status call takes someone in the office away from their work, and often pulls a driver into a phone call on the road. Enter your own numbers: how many of these calls you take on a working day, how long each one takes including chasing the driver, your working days in a month, and what an hour of the person answering costs you. The calculator shows the hours and the cost a month as you type.

No averages are built in, so the answer is only as good as your numbers. Our guide to stopping “where's my order?” calls covers the updates that answer most of them before anyone calls, and Cargoat is the delivery tracking we built for distributors.

calls / day

Calls asking where an order is or when it will arrive. Your honest average, not your worst day.

minutes

Count the call back to the customer and the call to the driver, if there is one.

days

A default of 21. Change it to your own.

$per hour

Their wage plus what it costs you to employ them, per hour.

Your result will appear here as you fill in the numbers above.

Here's how I'd use the number.

Each of these calls is someone asking one of four things: did you get my order, has it left, how close is it, and did it arrive. If you answer those four before they ask, there's a lot less reason to call.

Start by writing down when your customers hear from you today. That list is usually shorter than people think.
